Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
is blood that contains a higher than normal concentration of Blood Platelets per volume. PRP contains and releases several different growth factors that stimulate healing of bone, muscle, ligaments and tendons.
PRP is performed in the office or in conjunction with surgery depending on the medical condition being treated. Blood is collected from the patient and prepared with citrate dextrose before being placed in a centrifuge.
The spinning force generated be the centrifuge causes Blood Platelets to aggregate or collect at the outside of the collection tube. The aggregate or high concentration of Platelets is placed in a syringe for the injection.
The patient site is injected with a local anesthetic that contains epinephrine. This will provide local anesthesia and preparation of local blood vessels. The blood vessels are constricted intentionally to keep the PRP longer at the intended treatment area. Without the Epinephrine and resultant constriction of blood vessels, the PRP would absorb too quickly and not have time to generate the desired outcome. The PRP injection is then given to the patient at the anesthetized or numb area to assist in repair of the medical condition being treated.
